Pre-licensing Requirements

Q: Is there a pre-license education requirement?
A: Yes, potential licensees must complete pre-license education.

Q: How many pre-license education credits are required?
A: Property & Casualty = 40 Hours
Life & Health or Accident = 40 Hours

Q: What training methods are allowed?
A: Classroom / Online - Self Study

Q: What is the pre-license education completion procedure?
A: Applicants will submit a certificate of completion of 40 hours of pre-licensing to Promissor along with a license application and fees in order to take the District of Columbia examination.

Q: What fees are associated with initial licensure?
A: Exam Fees: $75

Q: What is the license examination procedure?
A: Licensees, following completion of pre-licensing, will schedule a licensing examination with Promissor four days in advance.

Continuing Education Requirements

Q: What is the CE requirement for each license type?
A: Life = 16 Hours
Health = 16 Hours
Life & Health = 24 Hours (6 hours in each line)
Property = 16 Hours
Casualty = 16 Hours
Property & Casualty = 24 Hours (6 hours in each line)

Q: What training methods are allowed?
A: Classroom / Online - Self Study

Q: What is the license renewal period?
A: Licensees must provide evidence of CE completion 90 days prior to the annual license renewal date (December 31 for May 1 renewal of each even-numbered year).

Q: Are carryover credits allowed from one renewal period to the next?
A: Carryover CE credits are not allowed.

Q: Is course repetition allowed?
A: Course repetition within the same biennium is not allowed.

Q: Who is exempt from meeting CE requirements?
A: Agents who hold a designation listed in Chapter 1, Title 26 of the DCMR, effective May 19, 2000. Agents who act as majority shareholder of a corporation and does not actively participate in the day-to-day operations of the corporation/partnership.

Q: What is the CE completion procedure?
A: A completion certificate will be presented to the agent for their records. Course sponsors will submit rosters to the CE Administrator within 30 days of completion. Agents will submit the license renewal form, and associated fees to the CE Administrator.

Q: What fees are associated with license renewal?
A: There is a $40 biannual fee charged for filing CE credits.
